Preparing Your Home for the Holidays: Electrical Safety Tips

Can you believe the holidays are just around the corner? With Thanksgiving coming up next week, I am seeing a lot of my neighbors already beginning to clean up their yards, hang lights, and prep their homes for the festivities!

To make sure your holidays are smoother than the Griswolds’s, here are some easy checks to make sure our homes are safe and ready for the hustle and bustle!

Electrical safety tips for worry-free holidays

1. Check Your Holiday Lights Before You Hang Them

Before you deck the halls:

  • Inspect Each Strand: Look for frayed wires, cracked insulation, or broken bulbs. If anything looks off, it’s safer to replace the strand.
  • Use Appropriate Lights: Make sure you’re using outdoor-rated lights for outside and indoor-rated lights for inside.
  • Avoid Overloading Outlets: Plugging too many lights into one outlet can cause overheating. Spread them out to different outlets if you can.

2. Use Extension Cords Wisely

A few pointers to keep things safe:

  • Choose the Right Cord: For outdoor decorations, use extension cords rated for outdoor use.
  • Keep Cords Clear: Arrange cords so they don’t become tripping hazards, especially if you have guests coming over.
  • Don’t Overextend: Avoid connecting multiple extension cords together. If you need more length, it’s better to get a single, longer cord.

3. Be Careful with Ladders and Overhead Lines

Safety first when setting up decorations:

  • Watch for Power Lines: When hanging outdoor lights, be mindful of overhead electrical lines. Keep ladders and decorations at a safe distance.
  • Stable Setup: Ensure your ladder is on firm, level ground, and have someone spot you if possible.

4. Test Your Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

A quick but important step:

  • Press the Test Button: Make sure alarms are working properly before the holiday cooking and heating kicks into high gear.
  • Replace Batteries if Needed: If it’s been a while, swapping out for fresh batteries is a good idea. (We recommend changing them out when the clocks change as a good reminder point during the year!)

5. Keep an Eye on Heating Devices

Stay warm safely:

  • Space Heaters: If you’re using them, keep them away from curtains, furniture, and bedding. Turn them off when unattended.
  • Maintain Your Mini Split System: Clear any leaves or debris from around the outdoor units to ensure they run efficiently and safely during the colder months.

By focusing on these key areas, you can help ensure your home is safe and ready for all the joy the holidays bring.
