Are phone chargers a fire hazard? Avoid this common mistake!

May is Electrical Safety. Here’s a tip  from Corrao Electric!

It’s one of those everyday things that doesn’t seem like a big deal.

Your teen climbs into bed, plugs in their phone, and scrolls themselves to sleep. The phone ends up buried under the covers, or even tucked under a pillow.

No sparks. No smell. No smoke.
Just a quiet charge while they sleep. Or so we hope.

But here’s what many families don’t realize: most phones and tablets are powered by lithium-ion batteries, and those batteries create heat while charging. When that heat gets trapped by bedding or soft surfaces, it has nowhere to go. Over time, it can build up to dangerous levels.

In rare but very real cases, this kind of heat buildup has caused phones to melt, catch fire, or even explode while charging. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it’s fast, and it can be devastating.

So, what’s the fix? Phone Charging Safety.

Why Licensed Electricians Matter

It’s simple, and it starts with awareness.

As part of Electrical Safety Month, we’re encouraging families to take a moment to talk about safer charging habits at home, especially with teens and young adults. This isn’t about scare tactics. It’s about giving people the information they need to make smart, low-effort changes.

Here are a few small things that make a big difference:

  • Charge phones and tablets on a hard, flat surface like a nightstand or desk
  • Avoid charging under blankets or pillows
  • Use original or certified chargers
  • Replace any cords that are frayed, damaged, or feel hot when plugged in

And if you see your kids drifting off mid-scroll, gently remind them:
Keep it on the nightstand, and skip the doom scroll.

They might roll their eyes now, but they’ll appreciate you later… maybe when they are adults!

Electrical safety doesn’t have to be complicated. It just has to be intentional.

If you ever have concerns about your home’s electrical setup or want to make sure your system is safe and up to date, we’re here to help. From outlet upgrades to whole-home inspections, Corrao Electric is proud to be your trusted local team.
