Has your home turned into your new office and classroom combined? PHEW, I’m not alone!

Residential electrical demands have significantly increased over the past year. With so many of us working from home and/or remote learning on a daily basis, we now find ourselves needing additional electronics, equipment, and power to keep us working efficiently. However, not everyone has a dedicated office space in their home to meet those needs, and accommodate everyone in the household.

Fortunately, there are a few simple, and essential, electrical solutions that can help us power through (haha- get what I did right there?) and keep up working efficiently and without disruption!

Additional outlets

With people working (and maybe even schooling) from home, there may not be enough outlets and USB ports available to keep everyone plugged in. Sometimes (most times actually) plugging too many electronics/equipment into a power strip or extension cord doesn’t quite cut it. In fact, this can actually end up damaging equipment in the long run.

A simple way to solve this problem is to install extra outlets, especially in the areas that are being utilized as a work space. Outlets with surge protection, and even USB charging ports in the walls, provide an easy, convenient way to charge all of our devices without trying to find the nearest charger. Having an outlet on each wall offers the flexibility to move around or rearrange equipment, and accommodate everyone working at the same time. Installing outlets is the most cost effective measure to keeping everyone in the home plugged in.

Dedicated Circuits for Electronics

Several computers running at once during the day, can sometimes create power problems in our home’s electrical system. The electrical circuits that supply energy to existing outlets may simply not have enough power. This can create power failure, and in some cases it can even cause electronics and equipment to fail, as well.

Installing dedicated circuits, and adding outlets in different areas, can help balance energy use and provide the power necessary to keep our equipment running efficiently.

Surge protection

Our home’s electrical system calls the shots when it comes to how much power we have in the house. Sudden power surges, which can be created by weather, spikes from the power grid, or too much strain on the system, can not only cause power disruption, but can also damage the electronics and equipment we need to keep to keep us up and running.

Installing whole-house surge protection directly to the electrical panel, as well as into new outlets in our home working spaces, can protect the equipment and other electronics and appliances in our homes, as well.

Often times, installing new outlets, dedicated circuits and surge protection will meet the demands for working and learning from home. However, some homes electrical needs are more significant, and may require an electrical service upgrade.

If you are finding yourself scrambling for outlets, or frustrated that you don’t have enough power to accommodate your home’s needs, give us a call. We can help you determine what options will best serve you to keep you working and studying at home, for the foreseeable future.

The Masssave program offers Massachusetts residents rebates, savings and other incentives for making energy efficient improvements to their home.  One service that they offer, at no cost to the homeowner, is a Home Energy Assessment.  This service is done by an energy specialist who conducts a thorough evaluation of the energy being used in the home, from rooftop to basement.  Once completed, you will receive an energy savings plan, developed by an expert, who will also explain what incentives are available to you based on what improvements need to be made.  The 2 hour process will teach you how to reduce your energy costs, improve your home's performance and create a healthier living environment.

Based on the recommendations made by the energy specialist, a homeowner may qualify for specific discounts or savings on their home energy costs.  Typically, suggestions are made to upgrade older appliances for High Efficiency appliances that use less energy, but produce the same results.  The Masssave program claims that you could potentially save up to 50% on energy use all year with certain upgrades, or qualify for a 75% rebate (up to $2,000) by getting the energy efficient improvements recommended during your Home Energy Assessment.

This program is available for residences in Massachusetts ONLY with homes of 1-4 people.  For more information, or to schedule a no cost energy assessment for your home, contact Masssave at 866-527-7283.

There are also other things that you can do to bring down your home's energy costs, that are simple and very low cost.  Here are just a few:

  • Switch to Compact Florescent Bulbs
  • Install Programmable Thermostat's
  • Upgrade to Energy Star labeled appliances

If you have any questions on having any of your electrical systems, wiring or appliances updated, please feel free to give us a call at 508.884.3003.  Consultations are always FREE and we are always happy to help, especially when it comes to helping our customers save money!

The summer months are filled with long hot days, and while we are more likely to spend some time outdoors during this season, energy bills tend to sky rocket.  The obvious culprits for this phenomenon are Air Conditioners and Pool Pumps, particularly in July and August.  There are however some things that we can do to help reduce our energy costs during the summer.  Cutting back unnecessary energy use is an easy way to reduce energy consumption while saving money. Here are 10 simple suggestions of things you can do at home, to help save on energy this summer:

1.  Operate pool filters 4-5 hours a day, and put them on a timer.

2.  Close window shades during the daytime.

3.  Seal air leaks that cause drafts, as they force your cooling system to work harder.

4.  Turn off ceiling fans when you are not in the room - they cool you NOT the house!

5.  Keep air conditioning units within a comfortable temperature range.  The suggested range is 74-78 degrees.

6.  Avoid running appliances during the peak hours of 4pm-6pm.

7.  Take cooler and shorter showers.

8.  Replace A/C filters before the start of each season.

9.  Grill or microwave rather than use the oven or stove during the warmer months.

10.  Shut the A/C off when you are not home.  Put air conditioning units on a timer to turn on an hour before you arrive home.

Energy Saving Investments

Aside from these simple steps, there are also energy saving investments that a homeowner can make to help reduce their energy consumption that will show a savings on their annual energy bills.  Here are a few things that you may want to consider looking into if your energy costs are of concern to you:

1.  Install a whole house fan.

2.  Install an Energy Star rated A/C unit.

3.  Install window shading.

4.  Replace your refrigerator with an Energy Star rated appliance.

5.  Increase attic insulation.

6.  Install Energy Star windows.

7.  Install solar panels.

If you are curious about how much energy you are consuming in your home, you can also have an energy audit performed.  An energy audit will tell you your homes exact energy consumption, and what factors are the highest contributors to it.  For more information about getting an Energy Audit done on your home, contact your local utility provider.

Corrao Electric is a Certified Dealer, Installer and Service Technician for two of the most trusted names in generators.  Generators have become a much more affordable and desirable option for ensuring your power stays on, even when New England weather threatens to shut it down.  Not only are we able to supply and install these units, but we are also capable of servicing the units, on an annual basis (which is recommended) or if a problem arises.  This saves our customer time and money and offers them the convenience of dealing with one vendor throughout the entire process, who guarantees their work and will be there at a moments notice!

There are two types of generators to consider:

Portable Generator: These units are good for occasional power outages when you need power for back-up lighting and small appliances. They are on wheels, require fuel to run and must be kept stored.

Automatic Stand-By Generator: These units are the most convenient and guaranteed means of securing power during an outage, for your entire home. They are permanently installed outside the home, so there is no need for manual connection. They connect to either natural gas line or propane tanks and have an automatic transfer switch to detect power failure and turn the main power supply over to the generator.

Contact us today for more information on generators, or for an installation quote on either of these types of units.

So you are interested in having a pool installed, but you don't know where to begin.  There is not just the actual pool to think about, but also the other components as well.  Such as the landscaping, the fencing, and yes, the electrical work.  You may think that drowning is the only safety concern with swimming pools, when in fact, faulty electrical wiring can be just as dangerous.  Continue reading to learn how hiring the right electrician when installing your pool can keep you and your family safe and swimming for years to come.

Why do I need an Electrician?

First of all, pools, weather and electricity have NEVER been the best of friends!  Anytime you have an area that is subject to bearing the brunt of what mother nature may dish out, that requires electricity to function (i.e. swimming pool pumps, outlets, lighting, etc.) you need to be sure that proper devices are being installed.  That being said, let's talk more about what you will need an electrician to handle for your pool installation.

First and foremost, you will need an electrician to install a sub-panel in an area near the pool, usually a pool house or small shed. This is a smaller version of the electrical panel on your home, that will house the power for all the electrical components in and around the pool area.

Secondly, and more importantly, you will need an electrician for the grounding and bonding of the swimming pool.  Having a licensed and experienced professional electrician handling this is critical in creating a safe swimming environment.  A pool must be properly grounded to ensure that an electrical charge (be from lightning or exposed electrical hazard) doesn't pose a danger for those using the pool.

And finally there are the smaller, yet still important electrical components that you will need an electrician to handle to complete the installation.  The wiring for the pump motor, underwater light, GFCI outlet on pool house and pool heater or timer clocks, should you choose to use them.  There is also landscape lighting and speaker wiring to consider as well.

Hiring the right electrician up front can help you not only make sure that the pool you are having installed will be safe for you and your family to enjoy, but they can also help make your decisions on timer clocks, landscape lighting and outdoor speakers, to create the outside oasis you have been dreaming of.  This is where experience matters!

If you or someone you know is interested in installing a swimming pool, please give us a call today.  Consultations are always free and and we are happy to help.  Don't leave your decisions to an inexperienced person who could potentially put your family in danger.  Call your local electrician, Corrao Electric, "The Area's Dependable Electrical Profesionals!"

One of the top complaints we hear from our customers regarding contractors coming into their home is that they leave their home a mess!  We understand this is a concern when hiring an electrician, and have always taken great care to be neat and clean both while we are working and when we are done.  In fact, we tell our customers that we will leave the area cleaner than we found it!  When we come into your home to work, you will see us laying down drop cloths, wearing booties and sweeping and vacuuming the the area when we are finished.

One of our customers, who recently underwent a large renovation in their business, emailed me a picture of our guys sweeping, not only the area they were working in, but the entire store!  They were so pleased that we took the time to clean up after ourselves and mentioned that we were the only contractor on the job who was courteous enough to do so.

This is the kind of service you get when you hire Corrao Electric to handle your electrical needs.  Not only are we skilled professionals in the electrical trade, but as luck would have it, we are also pretty darn good cleaners as well!  We understand that working in someone's home is not just about installing a light or running some wire, but it is also about being courteous and respectful to their home while we are in it.

Springtime is when remodeling season is in high gear!  Kitchen and bathrooms are always the first rooms to date themselves in a home, and are often times, the most extensive areas to renovate as well.  Most people wonder why a bathroom would be difficult seeing that it is typically the smallest room in the house.  The reasons are plenty!  In this article we will cover why bathroom remodeling is such a project and small things you can do that make a big impact on the finished product!  Continue reading to learn more...

Bathroom Remodeling 101

Picture this...  Your home was built in 1975.  The colors of the day were vibrant yellows, burnt oranges and dark wood paneling.  Mix in some floral and paisley patterns with a little bright brown tile flooring and - VOILA!  You have yourself a 1970's style loo!  The only problem is that it is 2012...and you can't stand to look at that bathroom for one more minute, nevermind another decade!  You have put off remodeling the bathroom,  because why?  Because bathroom renovations can be tough.

Bathroom renovations can be a challenge for a number of reasons, but here are the main reasons:

1.  You are still living in the house during the renovation, which puts you down 1 bathroom.

2.  A lot of contractors have to be in that small space to get it up to par.

3.  To have it done right, it can be costly!

When you think of remodeling your bathroom, you automatically think - contractor!  Yes that's it.  I will call a contractor and he will come in and fix my bathroom.  But that is not the case.  It is not just a carpenter that will be paying a visit to your home.  There will also be a plumber, an electrician, and perhaps a flooring installer and painter too.  Then there is the building inspector, the plumbing inspector and wiring inspector too.  There are a lot of elements that have to come together in that one tiny room to make it all happen!  And one specialty is not any less important than the next.  You want to make sure that the contractors you have in your home are all the cream of the crop.  That is why finding a bundle package (contractor who has a qualified team of subs) can make this process much more seamless and give you the best results possible.

It's in The Details

When we think of making a room pretty, we often think of the larger elements of a room, ie. paint and flooring.  However, the design is really in the details, and lighting can make a huge difference.  The proper lighting layout, designed by an experienced electrician can create a serene environment.  When you combine that with some sleek fixtures and utlra-quiet exhaust fans, you can transform your simple lavatory to a luxury lounge!

Some simple advice when remodeling your bathroom, to avoid it dating itself a few years is to stay neutral with all things major!  When it comes to flooring and appliances (tub surround, toilet, countertop, etc.) stick with classic, neutral colors that will never go out of style.  Decorative elements, such as paint, curtains and wall hangings can easily be changed throughout the years, to give it that updated feel, without the need of an entire remodel.

So there are some things to consider when you are planning your bathroom remodel.  Do your homework, and always get the right contractors!  If you ever have any questions or are looking for a good referral, please give us a call.  We have a number of great contractors in all trades that we can refer you to for any of your remodeling needs.

And remember - Electrical Wiring Is Not A Hobby - Always Hire A Licensed Electrician!

If you are looking for an electrician for a bathroom remodeling project and would like to see our work, please visit our portfolio.   Wiring for remodeling projects is our specialty as an electrical contractor, and we are always happy to help!  Give us a call today at 508.884.3003 for questions or for a quote.

ABC6 News issued a warning on this morning's news to beware of scam artist's posing as home improvement contractors.  These supposed "handyman" types are dropping by people's homes, seeking fix-it-up type work, taking deposits from un-suspecting consumers and running off with the money.  So not only are the people who are buying into these imposters losing out, but us real deal contractors get a bad rap...again!

Watch to Watch Out For

Many legitimate contractors may actually come by your home, especially when they are working in the neighborhood, simply to introduce themselves or see if you may require their services.  The scam artists that we are talking about in this article, have some pretty tell-tale signs that they aren't who they claim to be.  There are ways to tell apart the good guys from the bad guys.  When someone randomly pulls into your yard soliciting work, there are a few things that should be considered RED FLAGS!

1.  Someone pulls up to your home claiming to be a contractor and they are in street clothes and an unlettered vehicle.

2.  The alleged "contractor" claims to handle everything, carpentry, electrical, plumbing and painting.

3.  They require an immediate deposit, without a contract in place.

4.  They are not planning to pull permits for the work in question.

There are some pre-cautionary measures that every homeowner should take whether they are hiring someone who knocks on their door, or someone they call on themselves.  In today's world you can never be too careful with you trust in your home, or who you are giving your money to.  Here are a few things that you, as a consumer can do, to avoid being scammed in the home improvement process:

1.  Ask for referrals - from friends, neighbors, family, or business associates.  Good trades people will have a reputation that people will want to talk about and share willingly.

2.  Get references - if you are hiring someone you call on yourself.  This way you can ask the reference the questions that are important to you.

3.  Check Licenses/Certifications - especially for electricians!  You want to make sure that the person doing the wiring for your home has been granted by the State of Massachusetts (or whichever state you reside in) to do so.

4.  Make sure they are Insured - otherwise your homeowners policy could be compromised if their is a loss.

5.  Insist on Permits & Contracts - for any work you have done.  All home improvement work requires that a permit be pulled and any time you are giving your money away, especially an up front deposit, you want to make sure that there is a legal contract indicating what the contractor was to do in exchange for they money they received.

And if I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times before...

IF IT SOUNDS TO GOOD TO BE BE TRUE, IT PROBABLY IS!

If a contractor is willing to undercut another contractor for work, there has to be a reason.  Perhaps they are not licensed and insured, or they are going to take serious short-cuts to drive costs down.  Maybe those short cuts are buying used or junk materials, not pulling permits, or down right shoddy workmanship.  Whatever the case may be, there is a reason lurking behind it.  Professional companies will be able to provide you with references, insurances, licenses, permits and contracts.  They will also charge you a fair price, but one that allows them to stay in business as well.

If you are ever in need of a good home improvement contractor, or contractor of any trade, please feel free to give us a call.  We have a great list of references and we are always happy to help.  In the meantime, beware of the scam artists, because they could be at your doorstep next...But now, you know what to do to protect yourself!

Sincerely,
Kenny Corrao, Owner

The world around us is "going green" and the electrical field tops the list in terms of making our future a greener place!  You may have been hearing a lot of buzz about solar power and solar energy the past several years, but may not really understand what it means.  In this article, I will explain in plain English, what solar energy is and how it impacts our everyday lives.  Continue reading to learn more.

Let's start at the beginning: the sun.  The sun is a wonderful thing.  It provides natural light, and heat and a feeling of overall happiness in our lives.  Another thing that it provides us with: energy.  There are 2 forms of energy derived from the sun's rays; passive and active.  Passive energy is the light and heat given by the sun.  Active energy is energy taken from the sun and converted into a usable direct current.  This is what solar power is: harnessing the sun's energy.

Solar power is created in several different ways.  Several ways you may have seen or heard about are, wind turbines and solar panels.  These are starting to pop up all over the country, and will continue to flourish over the next decade or so.  Solar projects are gaining more momentum with the attractive government incentives being offered, as solar becomes more innovative.

Creating solar power at a residential level has become much more attainable due to the advancement in solar panels.  Solar panels are a great option for harnessing the sun's rays and turning it into sustainable energy, because they can be placed almost anywhere, on any scale.  The other attractive feature to solar panels is that it is relatively maintenance free and pays for itself with it's reduction in energy costs to the average homeowner.

The bottom line is this:  Solar power will be one of, if not the most, important sources of renewable energy in the future.  The electrical field is finding new and innovative ways to advance the use of solar power everyday and we are staying on top of the learning curve to be able to bring this awe inspiring technology to our customers.

If you or anyone you know is interested in a solar project for their home or business, please feel free to give us a call.  Consultations are always free and we are always happy to help!

LED lighting is the wave of the future. These bulbs are more energy efficient, give off a more natural light and they last for an estimated 30 years in comparison to it's soon-to-be ancient counterpart, the incandescent bulb. They are also an upgrade from the compact florescent bulbs which hit the market a few years back, in that these bulbs offer a more natural light as well, and they do not contain the toxic mercury vapor that the CFL's contain.

The question is, how much are you willing to pay for these bulbs? On Earth Day, Home Depot will be launching a new Phillips LED bulb that will cost consumers $60! You read me right folks, sixty big ones, for a light bulb! Sounds ludicrous right? But wait, there is good news. Phillips will be discounting the new product to $50 and is working with the government and utility companies to bring the cost down to somewhere between $20-$35 per bulb. Now this may sound like a huge investment, but when you consider that this bulb is expected to last somewhere in the range of 30,000 hours compared to an incandescent lasting 750 hours, there really is no difference in spending. You would need to replace an incandescent bulb nearly 40 times to every 1 LED bulb. So up front, it sounds like a pretty hefty price tag, but in the long run, it is projected to save us money. These bulbs are also much more energy efficient, which will help reduce a home's overall energy output, saving money on utility costs. These savings happen overtime, and the more energy efficient bulbs and appliances ones uses, the greater savings they will see.

Now I am not saying that we should all run to the big box store on Sunday to stock up on these over-priced lamps, but what I am saying is this: keep an open mind. We are living in a world where energy conservation has become a top of mind subject matter and technology is advancing rapidly. Maybe one day we will only have to purchase light bulbs once in a lifetime!

Of course, as I learn more on this hot topic, I will be sure to bring you the latest and greatest on these products and others like it. But for now, I will be using CFL's in my home and turning off lights when and where I can to save on energy!

If you have any questions about this new product, or on how to save energy in your home, please feel free to give us a call at 508.884.3003. Consultations are always free and we are glad to help!

Being in business, people often as us what makes us different from the other guys in the trade! Yes there are quite a few things that make us different from the other guys. We are neat, we are courteous around your children, we never have hidden costs, we educate our customers and we guarantee our work. These are just a few things that set us apart, but most of these things are expected of anyone you hire, regardless of the industry. Something that REALLY sets us apart from our competition is that we strive to leave the job "cleaner than we found it." You will always see us on the job with booties, drop cloths and a vacuum. Good news about both Generac and GE generators...the wait is over! They are back in stock and ready for installation.

All the nasty weather that knocked out power in the surrounding areas late last year, had generators flying off the shelves. The manufacturers could hardly keep up with the demand and the average wait time to get a generator was about 10 weeks! Both GE and Generac have finally caught up and the units are ready to go. While the weather may have changed, the demand for generators has not. Who could forget being without power for over a week this past fall, and the failure of the power companies to get it back on in a reasonable time? The residents in the Bristol County area sure haven't forgotten and don't want to be caught without power again when the next natural disaster arises.

Generators are a great option to protect the homeowner against power loss in the event of a storm, power surge or natural disaster. And now, there is a wide range of options available, which has made owning a generator more affordable than ever.

To learn more about generators or generator financing options, give us a call today at 508.884.3003. We are always happy to help and consultations are always free!

Who do you think has the most grueling licensing procedure and regulation of all the trades in the State of Massachusetts? That's right, the Electrical Trade. And with good reason. The MA Board of Electrical Safety has very strict requirements on obtaining and maintaining an electrical license, because electrical work is dangerous when it is not in the right hands.

I wanted to piggy back on yesterday's blog about the danger in using unlicensed electricians, and tell you a little more about what actually goes into getting an electrical license, and furthermore, what it takes to maintain that license. I promise to only take a few minutes of your time and keep it as basic as possible. Once you hear me out, you will see why hiring someone with a license (v. no license) is a no brainer.

There are several different licenses that can be obtained in order to become an electrician in the State of Massachusetts.

Journeyman's License - the holder of a Class B license and a person qualified to do the work of installing, repairing, or maintaining wires, conduits, apparatus, devices, fixtures, or other appliances used for heat, light, power, fire warning or security system purposes.

Master's License - the holder of a Class A license and a person, firm, or corporation having a regular place of business who, by the employment of journeymen or apprentices, performs the work of installing, repairing or maintaining wires, conduits, apparatus, devices, fixtures or other appliances used for light, heat, power, fire warning or security system purposes; provided, however, that no journeyman electrician so employed shall have more than one apprentice under his supervision; and provided, further, that not more than one such apprentice shall be employed for each journeyman electrician purposes.

Here are the requirements to obtain a Journeyman's License

  • Candidates must pass two exams, applied portion and a practical portion.
  • The practical portion has 70 questions and a time limit of 180 minutes
  • The applied portion has 30 questions and a time limit of 60 minutes.
  • 600 classroom related hours. 8,000 field/technical hours.
  • A 70% score is required to pass both portions of the exams.
  • Topics on the practical portion include general knowledge, services, grounding, bonding, motors, transformers, lighting, overcurrent protection, and alarm systems.
  • Topics on the applied portion include circuit calculations, electrical schematics and plans, materials and components, troubleshooting and testing, Massachusetts amendments, licensing laws and regulations.
  • Journeyman Electricians are required to pay a fee to take exam and to apply for license, as well as a renewal fee.
  • 21 hours of Continuing Education required every (3) years to maintain license.

Here are the requirements to obtain a Master's License

  • Candidates must pass 2 exams, business and law and the trade.
  • The trade exam has 80 questions and a time limit of 240 minutes.
  • A 70% is required to pass.
  • Topics on the exam include general knowledge, services, grounding, bonding, motors, transformers, lighting, over current protection, and alarm systems.
  • Master Electricians are required to pay a fee to take exam and to apply for license, as well as a renewal fee.
  • 21 hours of Continuing Education every (3) years to maintain license.

Think this is easy? Think again. The items listed above are really just the "highlights" of what it takes to get the license. It takes drive and dedication to obtain your license in the first place, and a sincere passion for the trade to maintain it. Remember, 8,000 hours sounds like a lot of hours, right? Well that is the bare minimum requirement to be allowed to even apply for your license. Once you have met the hourly requirements, you still have to pass the exam!

So that person claiming to be an "electrician" who doesn't have a license, doesn't have one because they failed to have 8,000 hours of experience in the trade and 600 hours of classroom instruction. Because of this, they couldn't pass the electrical exam, therefore, they could not obtain a license. I know that I would much rather have someone working on my wiring who has at least 8,000 hours of experience. The old adage certainly applies here, experience matters.

Not only do we hold both licenses at Corrao Electric, and continue to maintain them, but we do far above and beyond the education that is required for the trade. Why you ask? Well that is a discussion for another day. Stay tuned for more on licensing, education and hiring the right guy for your job based on experience, not on price.

It takes hard work to become a licensed electrician, and it’s something that we take pride in. However, not all guys in the trade are actually licensed to perform electrical work. In the past year alone Craigslist caught a ring of unlicensed electricians advertising their services for hire, and Walmart has a 5 million dollar lawsuit over their heads for using electrical laborers without the proper licenses, which resulted in an electrocution death on a jobsite. Not only is using unlicensed electricians bad for business, but it is also a danger to the consumer. Continue reading to see how this affects you and what you can do to protect yourself.

How Does It Affect You As The Consumer?

There are several ways that hiring an unlicensed electrician can hurt you as the consumer. But most importantly, it is dangerous. If they don’t hold a license, there is a reason for it. Either they were too lazy to put the effort into obtaining one, or they didn’t have the skills, education and experience required to be granted one. Remember an electrical license is something you earn, not something handed to you.

This issue comes to light recently for a number of reasons, but the biggest concern with using unlicensed guys is safety. Yes it hurts the economy, and yes, it hurts the little guys like us making an honest living, but even more so it hurts the consumer. The average customer does not understand what it means to hold an electrical license and how important that it is to their safety when it comes to electrical work. These unlicensed “electricians” (as they like to call themselves) not only lack the license to perform the work they are quoting, but they also lack the education and often times experience, as well. In addition to that, they typically do not carry insurance either. So when something goes wrong, where does that leave you? You guessed it. You are on the hook for someone else’s mistake. God forbid they got hurt on your property while performing the job they weren’t qualified to do in the first place. Not only will you have paid them to do the work (good luck fighting that in small claims) but your insurance carrier will then have to fight the injury claim they could place on your homeowners insurance. Think I’m kidding? Run a quick google search and read the horror stories for yourself. Even if your insurance carrier doesn’t pay the claim, they still had to fight the allegations on your behalf. What do you think that does to your premium?

How To Avoid Hiring Unlicensed Contractors

While it is tempting to hire the guy who’s price is $1000 cheaper than the other guys, it is often times just what it seems...too good to be true. It is easy for these unlicensed guys to quote the job at half of what the real deal companies are quoting, either because they aren’t pulling permits (because they can’t) or they don’t have general liability and workers compensation insurance. In most cases, it’s not one or the other, but both that drive their costs down. There is however a sure fire way to make sure that the electrician you choose to hire is licensed is to ask for a copy of their current electrical license, or their license number. You can even look them up here using their license number to make sure that they are licensed in the State of Massachusetts. The next key to making sure that you are using a reputable electrical contractor is to as for a copy of their current Certificate of Insurance. This certificate will show what they hold for insurance, the policy effective dates and the amount of coverage they have. If the electrician you are contemplating hiring does not carry general liability and workers compensation coverage, don’t hire them.

Not to toot my own horn here, but at Corrao Electric we hold a current Master’s Electrical License, and carry General Liability and Workers Comp insurance. It seems that more often than not I hear people say “good for you!” as if we are doing something exceptional, when in fact we are simply doing what is required! If all the electricians out there would just get on board and start playing by the rules we could level the playing field and stop competing on price, but rather compete on talent of the trade. See what the problem is here folks....need I say more?

Just be sure that when you are looking for an electrician for your electrical project that you make sure they have a current and active license in the state the work will be performed in. Also, make sure that they have general liability and workers compensation coverage. Lastly, always remember, if it sounds too good to be true, often times it is.

When it comes to electrical work keep in mind - Cheap Electrical Work Causes Fires. Always Hire A Licensed Electrician!

Have you ever wondered why on earth we have to change our clocks twice a year? Do you look forward to gaining an hour in the fall, but dread the losing an hour in the spring? Perhaps you look forward to having the extended periods of sun in the evening and are embracing the change this weekend. Whether you are a lover or a hater of Daylight Savings Time, it is upon us. This weekend, Sunday March 11, 2012 at 2:00am we will set our clocks ahead by one hour as Daylight Savings Time in the U.S. officially begins. Continue reading to learn why we do this in the first place, and is it really worth it?

The Beginning of Daylight Savings Time

Daylight Savings Time was initially thought up by our dear old friend, Benjamin Franklin. He was the man who coined the term “early to bed, early to rise.” His thinking that rising before the sun would make us more productive, initiated the concept of Daylight Savings Time. The concept was first adopted by the Germans during World War I in an effort to conserve coal for their war efforts. The US implemented DST in 1918, but made it a mandatory practice during WWII. In fact, from 1942-1945 DST was a year round practice. At the end of WWII DST returned to it’s “standard.” Throughout history since WWII there have been periods of extensions in the country’s effort to conserve energy, but in 2005 an Energy Policy Act was passed mandating a month long extension DST every year beginning in 2007.

Are We Really Saving Energy?

The long and short of it, is that Daylight Savings Time is the country’s effort to conserve energy by reducing the electrical load or output, if you will, for a period of time. The jury is still out on whether we do in fact “save energy” during this time. There are studies that suggest that the energy that we would have normally been consuming in the evening hours is swapped out and being used in the darker morning hours under DST, which in turn, wipes out any net gains that we should see. Other studies suggest that energy consumption in the morning hours is far less than that of what is consumed during the evening hours under DST, which has offered up an estimated .002% reduction in the electrical load. There are several factors that come into play when attempting to determine the success that DST offers, but the primary component in all of these studies is location, location, location. The impact that weather has on energy consumption is far greater than any other influence, therefore warmer climates will show different energy usage than cooler climates, at any point of the year, especially during that of DST.

Which Side Are You On?

Some people say that Daylight Savings Time is a means to save energy, promote a healthy active lifestyle by getting people outside and the start of a new season. Some people just look forward to the extra hour of sleep in the fall or the extra sunlight in the spring. I know myself, I love gaining the hour in the fall, but I also look forward to the lighter hours in the evening during the spring as well. Throughout the year, regardless of DST or not, I make every best effort to reduce my energy consumption, as we all should (if not for anything else, the sanctity of our wallets)!

In this instance, I would have to say, I take a neutral stance.

What about you? Are you a lover or a hater of DST? Let us know your thoughts and why. And of course, if you have any questions on how to save energy (aside from changing that clock over) give your favorite local electrician a call.

DIY projects are a great idea if you are say, painting a room, or building a birdhouse, but when it comes to actual remodeling, especially electrically, DIY is unsafe and can be extremely costly. Continue reading to learn more.

With economic times being what they are many people turn to DIY type projects to spruce up their home. Turn on HGTV and you will find about 10 programs per day on Do-It-Yourself projects showing a homeowner how to take their home from drab to fab in just a 30 minute program! There are 2 things that we often don’t recognize. #1 - The peopl on those shows are PROFESSIONALS not the average homeowner, and #2 - There are HOURS of footage taken on these projects, crammed into a 24 minute program (and still 6 minutes of commercials). It would take the average homeowner triple that amount of time just to make a materials list, never mind draw up a plan, move the furniture, set up the tools, begin the work and complete an entire project!

Here are the reason NOT to DIY...

1. Safety - Contractors are skilled professionals who are trained in their trade to perform the necessary work on your project in safe manner. Especially with electrical wiring. Because the risk for electrocution or fire hazard is so great, you should always hire a licensed electrician for your project.

2. Cost - People think that they are getting a great deal when they take on a DIY project when in fact, more often than not they are paying far more than they would have had they hired the right contractor from the beginning. Mistakes are very costly in home remodeling and one small mis-step could cost thousands to repair, and you would still need a contractor to come fix it.

3. Quality - When you are sick you go to the doctor. When you want to learn you go to school. So when you are doing a home improvement project, you should HIRE A CONTRACTOR! This will guarantee your work is done right.

4. Time - All of our lives are extremely busy. With work, kids and other priorities we are all lucky we are able to find a minute to ourselves. Let alone a week or more worth of time (uninterrupted no less!) to complete a remodeling project. But a contractor, whether it is an electrician or other trade, does this for a living so has at least 40 hours a week that they can dedicate solely to getting your project completed.

The moral of the story is, before you take on a DIY project consider the risks, which will usually outweigh the rewards. There are plenty of contractors that you can hire that will give you a great job at a fair price without any disruption to your life.

As always if you have any questions, please feel free to call your favorite local electrician. Consultations are always free and we are happy to help! Happy Remodeling!

Is your electrical panel 20 or more years old? Do you have a panel that has been removed from the market due to safety issues or one that is outdated? Chances are, you probably don't know. Continue reading to learn more.

Today's society relies on electronic appliances to handle most of it's everyday activities. From computers, HD televisions and office equipment, to food storage and preparation and home heating. Because electricity is such an ever present need in our daily lives, something has to provide that power to us. The power source in our home, is our electrical panel. We need to have the proper size panel to handle the load that the homes electrical output requires. Today's needs are much greater than that of homes 30-50 years ago. For example, in the 1950's, a 60 amp panel would have been the recommended, whereas today's recommendation would be close to double that, if not more. So what happens if your panel can't handle the load you are putting on it? You guessed it...popped fuses, blown circuits, or even worse, a fire hazard.

Outdated & Recalled Panels

Two particular panels that are no longer in use are the outdated Fuse Boxes and Split-Bus Panels. Both of these types of panels are still around in homes, that have not been updated since their original installation. It is important to upgrade these to a circuit breaker panel for a number of reasons. First of all, these panel types are archaic in nature these days, therefore parts for them are few and far between. Secondly, and most important, these are NOT SAFE OPTIONS. Both present fire hazards due to their own fundamental structure and by the improper way they are handled by most homeowners.

Two other panels that a homeowner should beware of are Federal Pacific Panels or Zinsco Panels. Both of these panels are a proven fire hazard and are most certainly compromising the electrical integrity of your home. These panels have been taken off the market and should be removed as soon as possible. If you have one of these panels in your home, contact an electrician immediately.

What to Do

If you have not recently had your electrical panel inspected, then you should contact your local electrician. An inspection of your electrical panel will determine if your panel is not only safe, but also if it can handle the load that your home needs it to support, without presenting a hazard. You may need an electrical panel upgrade if you have an outdated or unsafe panel. An electrical panel upgrade should only be done by a licensed electrician. Hire an experienced electrical contractor so you can be assured that you are getting a true professional, and only licensed electricians. This will give you the peace of mind knowing that your electrical service will be safe, and installed according to the National Electrical Code. Electrical Fires are preventable when you use an experienced, licensed professional to handle your electrical work.

If you have any questions, call us, your favorite local electrician! We are always happy to help, and we want to make sure that our community is safe. Consultations are always free! Remember - Cheap electrical work causes fires! Always hire a licensed electrician!

Did you know that the winter months are the most dangerous months for electrical fires? Fire deaths are higher in these months, because the winter calls for more indoor activities. Continue reading to learn how to avoid an electrical fire in your home.

The Cause

Electrical problems account for nearly 30,000 fires annually, and roughly 53% of residential electrical fires are due to faulty electrical wiring. During the winter months, particularly December and January, fire deaths are at their highest, mainly due to people remaining indoors during this season. This causes an increase in lighting, heating and electrical appliance usage. Many of the fires are a result of faulty use of electrical appliances (extension cords, outlets, lamps, space heaters, etc). and can easily be avoided.

Safety Tips

  • Routinely check your electrical appliances and wiring.
  • Replace any old or damaged electrical cords.
  • Discard and replace any tool or appliance that administers even the smallest electrical shock, or if it overheats or sparks.
  • Keep children away from electrical appliances, cords and outlets. Use tamper resistant outlets or safety covers, at all times.
  • Never overload your circuit breakers or an extension cord or outlet.
  • Keep flammable materials (including blankets, drapes, etc.) away from heating units.
  • Look for UL listing on electrical appliances prior to purchasing.
  • Make sure you have working smoke detectors. They can save your life!
  • Hire only a licensed professional electrician to perform electrical work on your home!

For further questions on how to stay safe in your home, or if you may need our services, please feel free to give us a call. We are always happy to help and consultations are always free.

And remember, cheap electrical work causes fires, ALWAYS hire a licensed professional electrician!

Did you know that by cutting your heat by just 1 degree you can save up to 5% on energy use? With heating costs on the rise and the colder temperatures settling in, this hits home more than ever. Sure you can always just blast the heat when you’re awake and turn it down when you’re asleep or leave the house, but what happens when you forget? Well now there is an even better option. Introducing the Nest Thermostat; an automatic, self contained, smart device that learns your lifestyle and adjusts the heat in your home accordingly. Continue reading to learn how this device can save you money on your home heating bill.

The Nest Thermostat is a smart device that is designed to do what you tell it to do. Plain and simple. No programming and no changing the thermostat are required with this thermostat. The device programs itself within a week of being installed in your home.

Sounds too good to be true right? Here’s how it works: The Nest operates on a Wi-Fi connection which allows it to get weather updates, so it knows how the heat in the home will be affected by the weather outside. It also has Auto Sensor; a feature which allows it to sense movement by the people occupying the space. Over the course of a week, the sensors learn the typical daily routine of the house and it creates a heating schedule, designed to heat the home when needed, and lower the heat when the space is not being occupied. The Nest also has an Energy History Option, which allows you to see how much energy you use over the course of time. All these features combined save you energy, which in turn, SAVES YOU MONEY! Genius!

Have questions about The Nest or have to have one installed in your home? Give us a call at 508.884.3003 and let us help you start saving money today!

The smoke alarm is one of the most simple yet critical pieces of technology that anyone should have in their home. In fact, not only should you have it, but it is required by the Electrical Code in the State of Massachusetts that you have these installed in your home during a building or remodeling phase. When you attempt to purchase/sell your home, the Fire Department must sign off that the smoke alarms are functioning properly and that there are the proper number, per code, throughout the house.

Statistics

The National Fire Protection Agency suggests that the average life expectancy of a residential smoke alarm is 7-10 years, and the average carbon monoxide detector is roughly the same, slightly less. There are combination units as well, which are a much more cost effective and reliable choice when it comes to these devices, versus the plug in type C02 detectors. We recommend that our customers check their smoke/C02 alarms on a monthly basis by simply pushing the test button to ensure that all units are working. Furthermore, we advise to have all these devices replaced at around 5-7 years to ensure optimal functioning.

The US Fire Administration estimates that electrical fires account for approximately 67,800 fires annually in the US, 485 deaths and $868 million dollars in property damages! Most of these fires are the result of improper wiring methods and the injuries and death are caused by a lack of functioning smoke alarms in the home. It can take seconds for a spark to become a flame and minutes until it is a full fledged house fire, so every second counts.

Signs they Need Replacement

  • As I mentioned previously, a good time frame to have them changed out is around the 5 year mark. You may sometimes be able to get away with longer, but they should, at the very least, be looked at by a professional. If you are not sure on the age of them, have them inspected. If one or more of your alarms are chirping, that is a sure sign that one of the hardwired units are not working, or one needs replacement.
  • If you would like to have combination units installed.
  • If they do not function during a monthly test of the unit.
  • If you are not sure, give us a call. We will be able to talk you through the testing process, answer any questions you have, or come out to inspect or replace if need be.

Check your smoke alarms today. Do not put it off until tomorrow.

Have no fear, your favorite local electrician can handle all your generator needs, from soup to nuts. Servicing your generator at certain points throughout the year is critical to ensure proper functioning of the unit when you need it. Continue reading to learn more...

A generator is the kind of thing you don't want to use, unless you have to. And when you need it to work...it better! While these units are quite reliable and useful in the event of a power outage, they do require some maintenance to make sure that they operate properly when duty calls. The time of year is among us, when the days are shorter, and it begins to get dark much earlier. Most of us arrive home after a long day of work to a dark driveway entryway, leaving little to no visibility of where we are walking. This, combined with winter weather (snow, ice, freezing temperatures) can cause dangerous walking conditions, which can lead to injury. If you find yourself in this situation and want answers, continue reading to see how this can easily be fixed.

There are a few simple solutions getting light where you need it most during the dark winter days. Outdoor lighting can be installed in a couple of different ways to get the desired results you are seeking. Here are a few great options:

1. Flood lights on an sensor in the driveway. These lights will come on as you pull in the driveway, lighting up the area, making ice more visible, and give you a sense of security when pulling in.

2. Walkway lighting. Walkway lighting can be installed as photocell (comes on when the sun goes down, off when it comes up) or even on a timer. Both are great options and will light your walkway, giving you great visibility.

3. Porch lighting & interior lighting. All lighting can be set up on a timer. A porch light that comes on at say, 5:30 when you arrive home, will illuminate the area that you are entering which will give you an added sense of security when arriving home during the dark night hours.

All of these things can be done as well on existing lighting you have.

All lighting must be installed by a licensed electrician. DO NOT attempt to install lighting on your own, because electrical wiring is not for the faint of heart, and it can cause serious injury if not done properly. If you are interested in any of these options, please feel free to give, us, your favorite local electrician a call, and we would be more than happy to give you more information.

As always, consultations are FREE!

Stay safe and save a few dollars this holiday season, while still enjoying all the beauty that holiday lighting has to offer. Read on to see a few tips on how to do just that.

1. Unplugging - Be sure that all your decorations are unplugged for a certain portion of the day to ensure that there is no chance of electrical fire, and to cut back on energy costs by not having them plugged in for extensive periods of time.

2. Timers - Timers can be a useful tool to eliminate the need for the constant unplugging of lighting and gadgets, etc. Some sets even come with built in timers, others can be set up on separate timer adapters.

3. Avoid Overload - It is a good idea to not overload any outlet or powerstrip with too many devices. Having too many running at one time off the same circuit can trip breakers, cause power outages and even electrical fires in some cases.

If you would like more information on electrical safety during the holidays, please feel free to visit us on Facebook for our weekly tips or give us a call. Stay safe, enjoy the season!

Electrical outlets are what some might say a necessary evil. We need them to give utilize our precious electronics and appliances, but when you have little ones around, they become a source of panic, rather than power. Read more below on what you can do to keep your kids safe around electrical outlets.

Children are taught from a very young age to match things both visually and manually. For instance, an infant is taught, as early as 4 months of age to begin using their hands to put things together. Blocks and puzzles for this age range are made in all shapes and sizes and kids are taught to put the round peg in the round hole, etc. Once a child becomes mobile, they become curious about the world around them and begin to touch everything they can see at eye level, which puts electrical outlets in their direct view. A child will pull themselves up to touch them and will then proceed to either stick their fingers in them, or use whatever is within their reach to push through them. This is an extremely dangerous situation for kids, which can result in electrical shocks, electrical burn or even death.

How to prevent electrical injury

There are several options to keep kids safe from electrical outlets. There are the good old standby plastic plugs that block the outlets from being exposed. These are a cheap, but effective way of keeping kids little fingers out of the outlets. They are also a pain in the you-know-what. Not only do they have to be taken out each time the parent may want to use the outlet, but what happens when the child is old enough or skilled enough to take them out themselves? Back to square one...

A better option is to have tamper resistant outlets installed throughout the home. A tamper resistant outlet is a new type of outlet that is exactly that: tamper resistant. The outlet has blocks inside the outlet that require that and object (plug) that is the exact size of the slot is put in with equal amounts of pressure on both sides in order to get through. This kind of device makes in nearly impossible for a child to stick something, such as a key, into the outlet, therefore preventing injury. These outlets are now required for any new construction project as part of the 2011 National Electrical Code. Ask your electrician about having tamper resistant outlets installed in your home. The cost of these outlets is relatively cheap, usually around $50-$100 for the average home, plus the cost of installation. These must be installed by a licensed electrician, but the devices can be purchased at your local hardware store. The cost of having these outlets installed is priceless compared to the piece of mind you will have knowing your little one is safe.

Finding a good electrical contractor or a contractor in general, can be tricky. Many people assume that they can google search for local electricians in their area and find their perfect match. This is far from the case. Read more to find out exactly what to look for when searching for an electrician.

When you are searching for an electrician, or any tradesman for that matter, it is important to not only be very specific for what you are looking to have done, i.e. “electrical panel change” or “generator installation” or “licensed electrician”, but also to ask the right questions once you are in touch with them. For example, if you are looking to remodel your home and are looking for an electrician in MA or in RI to complete the work, you want to make sure that they are in fact a licensed electrician in that state. You also want to make sure that they carry the proper insurances as well. Steer clear of any contractor who tells you that they will avoid pulling electrical permits to “save you money” or one who quotes you far less than the other quotes you have received. These electrical contractors will only cost you more money in the long run. Ask for references on previous projects they have done, and call them. An electrical contractor who is worth their salt will meet with you, answer all your questions up front and be able to provide you with the proper proof of insurance and their electrical license on the spot. And remember, when something sounds to good to be true, it often is. When in doubt, give us a call.

Having a generator is now a NEED!

The recent weather in New England has made a generator no longer a want, but a NEED. From tornadoes to hurricanes, to random blizzards in the fall; all of these natural disasters threaten to leave us without power and not only in the dark, but with winter approaching, in the cold. Read this NY Times article below about a family in CT who dealt with it first hand. If you are one of the thousands of people who had to be without power for days or even weeks due to our recent weather events, please give us a call. There are many options available to the average homeowner now for having a generator, that not only make it a attainable, but affordable too! Don't be left in the dark and in the cold this winter. Give us a call today for a FREE generator consultation to learn what is available to you!

Having a generator has now become an affordable luxury to the average homeowner. With weather in NE taking it's toll on the masses late summer and earlier this fall, it's no wonder people are flying to the big box stores to see if they can pick one of these generators up. The question people then find themselves asking themselves is "what do I do with this thing now that I have it?" What people don't realize is that while you can buy a generator from your local big chain hardware store, however you cannot install the proper hook-ups necessary to allow the machine to run when you are going to need it. So, what do you do? Here are some options...

How to get a Generator!

If you already went to Home Depot, Lowe's or Grainger and picked yourself up a generator, give us a call. With the entire Northeast Coast bracing for the impact of Hurricane Irene, here are some electrical tips to stay safe during the storm. If you run into problems, lose power, have issues with your electrical service, before or after the storm, call Corrao Electric at 508.884.3003. Be safe!

Preparing for the Hurricane:

  • Make sure flashlights, battery powered lanterns and other sources of light are readily available.
  • Make sure flashlights and radio batteries are fresh.
  • Make sure you have an adequate supply of medicine, first aid supplies, and baby items.
  • Keep at least two weeks supply of bottled water, non-perishable food items, batteries and firewood on hand.
  • Make sure if prescriptions are essential to get them refilled in case of an extended power outage or extensive damage to the area.
  • Make sure to have identification and documentation on hand such as social security card, driver’s license, birth certificate, and insurance information for your home, car, and life.
  • Have an evacuation plan for yourself and your family in case of an extended power outage.
  • Listen to weather forecasts and predictions for possible hurricanes – hurricane season is typically in the late summer and early fall.

During the Hurricane:

  • Make sure to get inside a building and stay away from the windows.
  • Don’t leave candles unattended and keep them away from the furniture, draperies and other flammable materials.
  • Make sure to keep children away from open flames.
  • Don’t open freezers and refrigerators any more than absolutely necessary.
  • Listen to local radio stations for news about power outages.
  • Turn off your heating and air conditioning systems as well as electric range.
  • Unplug sensitive electronic appliances such as TVs, DVD's, microwave ovens and computers – this will protect your appliances against power fluctuations that can occur when power is restored.
  • After power is restored, be sure to wait five to ten minutes before turning on appliances and heating systems.

After the Hurricane:

  • If power lines and poles are down in your yard or in the street, always treat them as if they are energized and dangerous. Never touch them and stay away. Make sure to call your local utility company.
  • Post-storm debris can hide power lines that have fallen. Fallen trees that contain energized power lines can electrocute any item it comes in contact with, such as a metal fence, a pond or standing water. Even the ground can be energized near fallen power lines.
  • If your electricity is out make sure to check with neighbors to see if they have power. If they do have power, you may have only a blown fuse or a tripped breaker. Never replace a fuse or reset a circuit breaker with wet hands or while standing on a wet (or damp) surface.
  • If you’re without electricity and want to use a portable generator, make sure to use it in a well-ventilated area.
  • Avoid using candles if possible. If you must, never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • If power remains out following a storm and you must cook with Sterno or charcoal, make sure to do so outside to avoid the build-up of deadly carbon monoxide fumes.
  • Replenish your supplies of batteries, bottle water, non-perishable food items and firewood for future hurricanes.

  • If your power goes out a lot or the lights in your home flicker, smell bad or make noise, have an electrician come to inspect your wiring.
  • An electrical outlet in the Bathroom, as well as in the Kitchen should have a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI). This is a tool that protects you from a dangerous shock when water and electricity come together. An electrician can install a GFCI for you.
  • All electrical outlets and switches should be covered by "faceplates."
  • All electrical cords should be in good condition.
  • Don't tie or knot cords. Don't let furniture sit on cords.
  • Use the right light bulbs in all lamps and light fixtures.
  • Look inside the light fixture. Find a label that tells you which light bulb size (wattage) is right for the fixture.
  • Look for a mark on any small appliance label such as ETL or UL when you buy electrical appliances (such as toasters, microwaves or coffee makers) and cords. This will tell you the product has been tested for safety.
  • Keep appliances dry and away from water at all times.
  • Avoid overloading: Don't plug in too many appliances at once.

Federal Pacific Electrical Panels have been deemed a fire waiting to happen due to faulty breakers not tripping during periods of excessive load. After many incidents, testing on these units indicated a failure rate on average as high as 65% of the time. Because of the safety related defect, federal pacific lost it's UL rating and the panels have since been recalled and taken out of distribution.

These panels were manufactured and installed between 1950-1980 and it is estimated that 28 million panels were installed across the country. The problem is that most homeowners don’t know if they have this type of panel until they either encounter the problem, or try to sell their home. If you discover that you have a Federal Pacific Electrical Panel it requires prompt attention, and needs to be replaced immediately!
